Role of Physiotherapy in Improving Mental Health

Mental disorders comprise a broad range of problems. They are generally characterized by the combination of abnormal thoughts, emotions, their behavior and relationships with others. Disorders include schizophrenia, depression, intellectual disabilities and other disorders due to drug abuse. People with mental illness like depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder often have a poor physical health and experience a significant psychiatric, social and cognitive disability. Physiotherapists have also a key and important role in the treatment of patients with schizophrenia and their interventions may have a broad spectrum of benefits for the patients. In general, physiotherapists are the physical health experts providing an important bridge between the physical and mental health in patients with schizophrenia. Promoting and encouraging the physical activity is central to the physiotherapist’s role in treating the individuals with schizophrenia and other mental health disorders.

·        Non-pharmacological management of pain

·   Expertise in prescribing personalized exercise programs, which may improve mood, promote wellbeing and address co-morbidities related to mental health or ill health diagnoses.

·    Interventions to deal with physical problems with individuals with mental state diagnoses that hinder social participation and recovery, eg. Minimizing or counteracting the side-effects a number of the psychedelic medications.

·      Expertise in motivating, wherever applicable, patients and promoting self-management within the context of mental and physical health problems.

·      Management of falls and quality problems for older individuals and organic process problems for kids and youth.

·   Expert recommendation and intervention to deal with impaired body awareness and cut back dissociation (disconnection from ‘thoughts, feelings, recollections or sense of identity) related to poor mental state.

· Development and delivery of individually-tailored life-style and weight management recommendation and programs
