Do you know the link between old age and mental health issues?

Mental health problems can be difficult to deal with at any age and no one should have to suffer in silence or feel like they are going to be judged for their problems. People generally believe that mental health problems get worse with the age but in reality, this is not necessarily true. Mental illness is not a natural part of the aging. In fact, mental health disorders affects the younger adults more often than they do older adults, according to some research study and however, seniors are less likely to seek help.

Older adult’s experiences stress like all other people, but even the normal emotional and physical stresses that go along with the aging can be the brisk factors for mental issues. Careful attention is necessary for the aged adults and their mental health may be even more important now amid fear and stress over the on-going coronavirus outbreak.

If you are in your mid or some late sixties, or older, and if you have been struggling with some emotional or behavioral issues lately, it could be possible that you’re going through some age-related troubles. But, it is also very likely that you are simply reacting to an overwhelming situation in your personal life. Don’t feel ashamed to admit that you are having difficulty coping to talk to your family and loved ones about your struggles and decide how you can get help.

There are several clinical issues that are involved in treating the senior citizens with new and chronic mental issues or illnesses. A loved one may develop one of these conditions as they get age, or they may have received a diagnosis long ago and remained stable on the same psychiatric medication for many years. In the latter case, however, their treatment plan may require to be adjusted as the aging body processes these drugs differently and new conditions develop and other medications are added to the mix.
