Dementia is a broad term that mainly explains a loss of our thinking ability, memory, and other the mental abilities. Many things can cause dementia. It happens when the parts of our brain used for learning, memory, decision making, and language are damaged or diseased.

The most common causes of dementia include:

·  Degenerative neurological diseases. These include Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, and some types of multiple sclerosis. These diseases get worse over time.

·       Vascular disorders. These conditions affect the blood circulation in your brain.

·        Traumatic brain injuries caused by car accidents, falls, concussions, etc.

·      Infections of the central nervous system. These include meningitis, HIV, and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

·         Long-time alcohol or drug use

·        Certain types of hydrocephalus, a buildup of fluid in the brain

Memory loss

Difficulty with tasks 


Disorientation

Language problems

Changes in abstract thinking

Poor judgement

Poor spatial skills

Misplacing things

Mood, personality or behaviour changes

Loss of initiative

 

A correct diagnosis of the problem dementia at an early stage is considered important for early treatment, support and planning for the future.

A complete medical assessment may identify a treatable condition and can make sure that it is treated correctly, or it may confirm that the presence of dementia and whether it is the Alzheimer’s disease or another type of dementia. Six types of assessment can help to confirm or exclude a diagnosis of dementia disease.
